The bank holiday weekend fiesta of football continues on Monday, as we take the trip to Vauxhall Motors fresh from Saturday’s entertaining 2-2 draw with Leek Town.
It will be a trip to familiar surroundings in Vauxhall Sports Club which was, of course, our home for the 2021-22 season.
Vauxhall Motors returned to the Northern Premier League this season after winning the 2022-23 NWCFL Premier Division and have also added further silverware to the cabinet in the form of the Champions Cup when they defeated Congleton 3-1.
THE TALE OF THE TAPE SO FAR:
Mick McGraw’s side started the League season with 2-2 draw at home to Witton Albion, in which the visitors claimed a point courtesy of an injury time penalty from Kingsley Williams.
Since the opening day, Motors have lost the following three fixtures to Nantwich Town, Prescot Cables and high-flying Chasetown respectively.
A hard-working, well organised and committed side, so Monday is sure to be another keenly contested fixture.
ONES TO WATCH:
There are plenty of familiar faces for Purps supporters to pick out, with four former Purps amongst Mick McGraa’s squad.
Defender Adam Hughes joined The Motormen in March after leaving City of Liverpool and made 30 appearances for the Purps last season, scoring twice.
Stephen Rigby is a new signing for Vauxhall Motors after leaving Widnes over the summer.
A versatile player who is confident on either foot, Rigby made 26 appearances for the Purps between 2020 and 2021.
Forward Conor Harwood has a brief spell at City of Liverpool last season, making 5 appearances in total before joining The Motormen on dual-registration.
Purps may also remember Bobbie McDonnell who was signed by Craig Robinson following our promotion to the Northern Premier League.
The young forward scored a stunning 35 yard volley during pre-season and notched a well-taken goal against Clitheroe early in our 2019-20 campaign.
PREVIOUS ENCOUNTERS:
It is, of course, the first time City of Liverpool and Vauxhall Motors have met in a competitive fixture, although there have been plenty of pre-season friendly matches over the past few years.
