Last time out saw City of Liverpool defeat Emley AFC 2-0 in the FA Cup on Saturday.

Supporters were treated to a real humdinger of a strike from skipper Nathan Burke from 30 yards to open the scoring.

Sadly there is no video footage of Burkey’s wonder goal but you can take our word for it that the FA Cup goal of the season is well and truly wrapped up!

Xenon Bahula came off the bench with 15 minutes to go and scored within moments of coming on, with a close range finish after great work from Elliot Johnston down the right.

An inspired substitution from Ello if ever you saw one!

The Purps manager was pleased with the result and to see his side get off the mark for the season, with attention turning to tonight’s game with Glossop North End straight away.

That’s two clean sheets out of three to start the season, with last Tuesday’s defeat at powerhouses Workington the only blot on our copybook.

Tonight’s opponents Glossop North End have had a strong start to their NPL West Division campaign, opening the season with a 0-0 draw away to Kendal, followed by a resounding 3-1 win at home to Runcorn Linnets.

They were defeated 1-0 at home by Kendal Town on Saturday in the FA Cup.

This will be the fourth time we have faced Glossop but our first League meeting as the previous encounters were in the FA Cup.  Back in August 2018 when the Purps were operating at Step 5 against Step 4 opponents, a twisting and turning Jack Hazlehurst equaliser earned a 1-1 draw at home, setting up a replay at Surrey Street.

The replay was a back and forth affair. Twice Glossop took the lead and twice the Purps got back into the game through John McGrath and again Jack Hazlehurst. The tie went into extra time and less than a minute in Dave Forbes picked the defender’s pocket and fired home the winner.

The most recent fixture between the two sides was our first game of last season, when City of Liverpool ran out 3-0 winners at Surrey Street in the FA Cup. Goals from Elliot Nevitt, Gerard Kinsella and Jack Hazlehurst sealed the Purps’ passage to the Qualifying rounds.
