PURPS SHOW SUPPORT TO THE RMT

City of Liverpool showed their support for the RMT Union during Tuesday night’s friendly fixture with FC United of Manchester.

The match saw guest speakers from Liverpool and Manchester branches of the RMT as well as union members gaining free entry to the match, with supporters of both clubs giving generously to a bucket collection in aid of the strike fund.

Guest speakers Phil Rowan and Darren Ireland addressed the crowd at half time, whilst the ground was adorned with banners and flags in support of workers.

On the pitch, Michael Ellison’s Purps put in an excellent performance in their first match back at Bootle FC’s Berry Street Garage Stadium.

In a feisty affair punctuated by plenty of full-blooded challenges, City of Liverpool took the lead midway through the first half when centreback Adam Hughes nodded a powerful header home from skipper Nathan Burke’s delightful ball in.

After the interval, substitute Danny McKenna made an instant impact, surging down the left after an excellent one-two with Max Allen.

The left back delivered a devilish cross to the back post which was nodded home by forward James Steele.

The Purps could have added to their lead with a fine long-range effort from Trialist which was touched wide by an excellent stop by FC United keeper Dan Lavercombe.

At the other end, Purps custodian Ryan Hamer produced a string of fine saves throughout the match and was only beaten in the last minute by an excellent long-range effort from Jack Bennett.

It was too late for the visitors though as moments later the final whistle was blown, with Ello’s Purps taking a well-deserved 2-1 win against higher tier opposition with the start of the league season only just around the corner.

Next up, City of Liverpool face Chorley for a 3pm kick off at home on Saturday 30th July, in what is our penultimate pre-season match.

The fixture is a testimonial marking the service of mercurial midfielder Jack Hazlehurst, with the gate being shared with Jack following five years in which he has well and truly written himself into Purps folklore.

Supporters are encouraged to get their tickets early and come to show their support to Jack in a match which will be a good test against National League opposition.

Tickets can be purchased in advance via Skiddle (link below) or on the gate.
