City of Liverpool produced an impressive display to beat Market Drayton Town FC in the first fixture back in front of Purps fans.

Craig Robinson’s side got off to the perfect start against the Northern Premier League South East division side.

After Craig Cairns was bulldozed to the ground by an aerial challenge on the left wing, Jack Hazlehurst whipped in a devilish free kick which was met by a perfectly timed run from Tom Stevens, who placed the ball beyond the keeper and into the net.

Moments after the opener, the Purps almost doubled their lead courtesy of John McGrath.

The winger made a trademark run in from the right wing, nipped beyond a defender and hammered a curling left footed effort inches wide with the keeper well beaten.

City of Liverpool left back Louis Corrigan was lively up and down the flank in a commanding start from the home side.

Corrigan whipped in an inviting cross from deep which dissected the Town defence and McGrath fired over from a difficult angle at the far post.

Louis was at the heart of the action again, playing in a whipped corner which was met with aplomb by Stevens who hammered the crossbar with an emphatic header.

The dominant first half display continued with McGrath robbing the visitors of possession deep in their own half, feeding Elliott Nevitt who teed up Trialist to fire into the side netting from the right-hand side of the area.

Purps keeper Owen Wheeler was largely a spectator during the first period but had to be on his toes to produce a magnificent point-blank range stop as the visitors found space on a rare foray into the home box.

Wheeler stood firm to push the ball out for a corner kick which was well defended.

As the half closed out Craig Cairns was denied by a good stop after hitting a snapshot on the turn.

The Market Drayton Town goalkeeper also produced a fine double stop to deny Nevitt and Hazlehurst on the stroke of half time as the Purps hunted the goals their performance merited.

After the interval the Purps remained in control, with Trialist and substitute Ethan Devine particularly impressing whilst running the midfield.

The home side doubled their lead in fortuitous and comical fashion early in the second half.

A Market Drayton Town defender played a back-pass to the goalkeeper who inexplicably allowed the ball to roll under his foot and into the net. Somewhere Peter Enckelman breathed a sigh of relief and hoped it was caught on camera!

In a second half punctuated by stoppages for substitutions the Purps added a third late on, saving the best goal of the night for last.

Tom Stevens gathered a corner kick in the box, laying it to the edge of the area for Trialist to emphatically hammer a left footed effort through the crowd and into the net.

In all it was a dominant and impressive display from the Purps in our penultimate pre-season fixture. The Purps head to face FC United of Manchester on Saturday 5th September at Broadhurst Park in our final fixture ahead of competitive football returning.
